1988 - PLO chairman Yasser Arafat addressed the U.N. General Assembly in Geneva, were it had reconvened after the United States had refused to grant Arafat a visa to visit New York.

2001 - Israel severed all contact with Yasser Arafat. Israel also launched air strikes and sent troops into Palestine in response to a bus ambush that killed 10 Israelis.

2002 - U.S. officials said that Iraq's 12,000-page weapons declaration did not account for missing weapons and did not explain attempts to purchase uranium.

2003 - Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured by U.S. forces south of Tikrit, Iraq. He was found in a "spider hole." He was taken into custody without a fight. The capture was officially announced the next day.

2004 - In Baghdad, Iraq, an al-Qaeda-linked suicide bomber killed 13 Iraqis near the entrance to the Green Zone.
