1991 - After nearly five years, Shiite Muslim radicals in Lebanon released American hostage Allen Sutten.
2001 - Israeli helicopter gunships attacked a security compound near the headquarters of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The attack was in response to suicide bombings by Islamic militants where 26 people were killed and nearly 200 injured.
2002 - The U.N. General Assembly approved six non-legally binding resolutions that called for new efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.
2005 - Northeast of Baghdad, Iraq, 19 Iraqi soldiers were killed and four more were wounded in an ambush by insurgents.
