1994 - Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin received the Nobel Peace Prize. They pledged to pursue their mission of healing the Middle East.
1998 - The Palestinian leadership scrapped constitutional clauses that rejected Israel's existence.
2001 - U.S. Marines secured the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. The building had been abandoned 12 years before.
2002 - The Iraqi government accused the U.S. government of taking control of a U.N. master copy of its arms declaration in order to tamper with it and create a pretext for war. The 12,000-page arms declaration had been supplied on December 7.
2002 - In the Arabian Sea, a ship carrying about 15 Scud-type missiles and nitric acid was intercepted. The ship, from North Korea, was stopped and boarded by two vessels from the Spanish Navy that were participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. After negotiations, the government of Yemen admitted the missiles were for their army and would not be delivered to any third party.
2003 - In Mosul, Iraq, U.S. troops killed a senior officer of the paramilitary group Saddam Fedayeen. Col. Ghanem Abdul-Ghani Sultan al-Zeidi was killed in his home in one of about 35 raids in Mosul.
2003 - Iraq's U.S.-appointed interim government established a war crimes tribunal to try former members of Saddam Hussein's regime.
